Strathaven is a small market town in South Lanarkshire, sitting about 20 miles south of Glasgow. It has a strong local community, decent amenities for its size, and a pace of life that suits people who want to step away from the city without losing easy access to it. I’m based here myself, and this article covers what the town is actually like to live and work in.

Living in Strathaven is one of those things that’s hard to describe until you’ve actually spent time here. It’s a small Scottish market town with real character, and I should know — I run my accounting practice from here.

Where Is Strathaven and How Do You Get There?

Strathaven sits in South Lanarkshire, roughly 20 miles south of Glasgow city centre. It’s close enough to the city to be practical, but far enough away that it feels like a different world. The A726 connects it to East Kilbride and onwards to Glasgow, and the M74 is within easy reach for longer journeys.

That said, residents are honest about one thing: you really do need a car here. Local residents consistently point out that Strathaven rewards people who aren’t depending on public transport for everything. It’s worth factoring that in before you decide to move.

Worth knowing

Strathaven has no train station. Bus services connect the town to Hamilton and East Kilbride, but driving is the practical choice for most people who live here.

What Is Day-to-Day Life Like in Strathaven?

Strathaven has the feel of a town that looks after itself. The Common Green is the heart of it, and the castle ruins give the place a sense of history that you don’t get in a new-build suburb. There are independent shops, cafes, a supermarket, and enough going on that you’re not driving to Hamilton for everything.

It’s predominantly a family town. People tend to put down roots here and stay. That creates a community feel that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere near a major city at this price point. If you’re weighing it up against somewhere more suburban, Strathaven tends to win on character.

Is Strathaven a Good Place to Run a Business?

I’ve been running STZ Accounting from Strathaven for years, and I’d say it’s a perfectly good base for a small business, especially one that operates remotely. The location means I can meet clients across South Lanarkshire without being based in the city, and operating costs are far lower than Glasgow. A lot of sole traders, contractors, and landlords in this area are in the same position.

One thing worth mentioning is infrastructure. A fire at the Strathaven telephone exchange in January 2026 disrupted broadband for around 1,500 customers and served as a reminder that rural and semi-rural towns can be more exposed to connectivity issues than city businesses. If you’re running anything that depends entirely on reliable internet, it’s worth having a backup plan.

What Is Changing in Strathaven Right Now?

Strathaven is a town that’s moving, not standing still. Plans for 12 new council flats on the former Ballgreen Hall site were approved in March 2026, with construction expected later in the year. It’s a modest development, but it signals that South Lanarkshire Council is investing in the town’s housing stock rather than leaving it to stagnate.

Planning applications and local decisions are all searchable now through South Lanarkshire Council’s public planning portal, so if you’re buying property or considering a development in the area, that’s a useful place to check what’s coming. The town isn’t dramatically changing shape, but it is growing steadily.
