Are your CIS records in order?

Answer five quick questions and get a clear picture of where your CIS bookkeeping stands right now.

WHAT I DO

What I handle on your behalf

From tracking CIS deductions month by month to filing your self assessment and reclaiming what you are owed, I cover the full picture.

01

CIS Bookkeeping and Record-Keeping

I keep accurate records of every payment you receive, every CIS deduction made by the contractor, and every allowable expense you incur. HMRC requires these records to be kept for at least three years after the relevant tax year, and I make sure yours are always in order. You will never have to worry about missing paperwork or a fine for failing to produce records.

Core CIS service
02

Self Assessment Tax Return

Your CIS deductions are pre-paid tax, and your self assessment is where you reclaim the difference between what was deducted and what you actually owe. I handle your return from start to finish, accounting for all your tools, van, fuel, materials, and other trade expenses to make sure your bill is as low as it legally can be. No guesswork, no missed allowances.

03

Monthly Bookkeeping and VAT Returns

If you are VAT-registered or approaching the threshold, I handle your quarterly VAT returns alongside your ongoing bookkeeping. Keeping your records tidy month by month means there are no surprises at year end and your cash flow stays clear. Everything is done to a fixed price agreed upfront.

WHY IT WORKS

Why clients come back every year

Subcontractors stay with me because I give them a straight answer, a fair price, and a consistent service they can rely on.

You always deal with me directly

When you message or call, it is me who picks up. There are no juniors, no handoffs, and no having to explain your situation twice. Over 25 years in real business before I qualified as an accountant means I understand how your work actually operates, not just how it looks on a spreadsheet.

A fixed price agreed before any work starts

You will know exactly what you are paying before I start. There are no vague hourly rates and no invoice that appears larger than you expected. That transparency is something my clients consistently mention, and it is a commitment I stand by on every job.

Your CIS deductions tracked and reclaimed properly

CIS deductions take money out of your pocket every time a contractor pays you. The only way to get it back is through a correctly filed self assessment that accounts for every allowable expense. I know exactly what subcontractors in construction can and cannot claim, and I make sure nothing is missed.

GETTING STARTED

How it works

Getting your CIS bookkeeping sorted takes four straightforward steps and does not require you to become an expert.

01

Book a free call

We have a short call so I can understand your situation. What you do, how you get paid, whether you are a sole trader or limited company, and what has or has not been tracked so far. There is no obligation and no charge for the call.

02

I review your CIS position

Once I know your situation I give you a fixed price quote covering exactly what I will do for you. I will also flag any gaps in your records or anything that needs attention before we file. You will know where you stand before anything moves forward.

03

I take over the bookkeeping

You send me your CIS statements, invoices, and receipts. I do the record-keeping, reconcile your deductions, and keep everything organised to HMRC standards. You get back to doing the work that earns you money.

04

Your return is filed and deductions are reclaimed

When it is time to file your self assessment, I prepare everything, explain the numbers to you in plain English, and submit once you are happy. Any CIS deductions you have overpaid come back to you through your tax refund.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Common questions

You need to keep records of the gross amount invoiced for each payment you receive, any CIS deductions made by the contractor, and the cost of any materials you supplied, all excluding VAT. HMRC requires these to be kept for at least three years after the relevant tax year. Failing to produce them if HMRC asks can result in a fine of up to 3,000 pounds.
CIS deductions are collected in advance and offset against your income tax and National Insurance through your self assessment tax return. If the total deducted is more than you owe, HMRC refunds the difference. The key is making sure your return is filed correctly and every allowable expense, tools, van, fuel, materials, and protective equipment, is included so your actual tax bill is as low as it should be.
You can manage it yourself, but the risk is missing expenses you are entitled to claim, misrecording deductions, or filing a return that does not reflect your true position. For most subcontractors the cost of getting it wrong, either through an unexpected tax bill or a missed refund, is higher than the cost of having someone do it properly. A fixed-price service removes the uncertainty.
From 6 April 2026 HMRC updated the CIS legislation, including changes to monthly return requirements and new anti-fraud measures. While most of these changes place obligations on contractors rather than subcontractors directly, they can affect your gross payment status and how your deductions are verified. It is worth making sure whoever handles your CIS bookkeeping is up to date with these changes.
